The wear layer is one of the first specifications buyers see when comparing SPC flooring. But 0.3mm, 0.5mm and 0.55mm should not be treated as simple good-better-best labels. The right choice depends on traffic level, project budget and expected service life.

How to think about wear layer
The wear layer protects the decorative film from daily abrasion. For apartments and rental units, a standard wear layer may be enough. For hotel corridors, offices or retail areas, buyers often choose a heavier wear layer because traffic is more concentrated.
Quick comparison
| Buyer question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| 0.3mm wear layer | Often considered for residential or lower-traffic rooms where budget matters. |
| 0.5mm wear layer | A common choice for hotel rooms, offices and many light commercial interiors. |
| 0.55mm wear layer | Used when buyers want a stronger specification for heavier traffic or longer service expectations. |
| Total thickness | Check total thickness and wear layer together; one number alone is not enough. |
Questions to send before ordering
Tell the supplier whether the floor will be used in bedrooms, corridors, offices, retail areas or rental apartments. Also send the area, installation method, subfloor condition and target budget. This makes it easier to recommend a wear layer without over-specifying the product.
